Captain Shreve girls explode past Haughton

HAUGHTON – The Captain Shreve Lady Gators exploded offensively with one of the highest scoring games of the past couple of years in winning the 2016 Jack Clayton Invitational at the Haughton gym on Saturday afternoon.

Maybe it was what they ate for lunch shortly before the 1 p.m. tilt, but the Lady Gators had their way in winning 98-33.

“I’m speechless,” Captain Shreve coach Keith Greene said. “The girls really played well together today. That’s pretty much the way they’ve been playing this season so far. We won the Logansport tournament last year, but this is our first this year.”

The offensive onslaught was led by five double-digit scorers, led by Aaliyah Stevenson and Kennedi Heard with 19 points apiece. Desyre Black added 14, while Kay Armstrong and Jalia Redd chipped in 10 apiece.

The Lady Bucs, were topped by Takaiyah Sweeney with 12 points and Champagne Davis with 10, never could find a groove against the frenetic pace set by the Captain Shreve defense.

“They are very athletic and talented,” Haughton coach Jennifer Pesnell said of the Lady Gators. “All five of them can handle the ball and all five of them can score. That puts a lot of pressure on your team.”

Shreve led from the outset leading 5-0 and 7-3 early before putting together a 14-5 run to end the first quarter and led 22-9. The Lady Gators’ win was never in doubt after that point.

“We’re just trying to play consistent game in and game out,” Greene said. “There are definitely some things we need to work on.”
